Diversity in study abroad

According to NAFSA, about 70% of U.S. students who study abroad are white. And, more than half of study abroad students choose a country in Europe as their destination of choice. Students of diverse identities and backgrounds have been historically excluded from opportunities to study abroad and access international educational experiences.

The problem

Students from a diverse background have to adjust to a new cultural environment, new etiquette, new food and new communication style, while at the same time navigating how their race, gender presentation, sexual orientation, faith and disabilities will affect their experience. These layers of uncertainty can cause anxiety, leading students to second-guess whether they can express themselves in every aspect of their new life and resulting in longer adjustment time and in diminished focus on their key achievements. CulturaGo is here to change that.

The solution

CulturaGo is on a mission to better support students when it comes to navigating a different culture in terms of their unique identities. In our Identity-Based Modules we have adopted both a country-specific and identity-specific approach. This means that students not only learn how to successfully integrate into a foreign culture with regards to that specific culture but also with regards to their own unique identity. In addition, the module gives all learners, no matter how they identify, an opportunity to foster greater understanding and awareness of the unique challenges some of their peers may face while abroad.

Our Identity-Based modules are currently available for Japan and the UK, with South Korea, Spain, and Italy coming soon. The topics discussed cover:

  • Navigating Racial and Ethnic Diversity
  • Understanding Gender Dynamics
  • Exploring Sexual and Gender Diversity
  • Relating with Religions (coming soon)
  • Dealing with Disabilities (coming soon)
  • Being a Heritage and Diaspora-Seeker (coming soon)

We’re driven by building connections across cultures, but we recognize that this can be challenging when having intersecting identities, and can add a whole new layer of complexity to the experience.

CulturaGo’s country-specific pre-departure information

General pre-departure information just doesn’t cut it anymore and is not specific enough to the context of the country in which students will be finding themselves in. CulturaGo ensures that students are well-informed about the attitudes toward people like them in the country they are about to visit, and how they can celebrate and enjoy who they are before they go abroad.

Learner Feedback

Since our launch, CulturaGo has welcomed enthusiastic learners from around the world, each taking on unique challenges as they embark on journeys to Japan, Korea, Spain, and the UK. A big thank you to those who have taken part in our courses and provided us with invaluable feedback and reviews.

“I was especially thankful to those of you who shared your own experiences with being a minority in Japan - as a biracial black and white woman with a great interest in LGBTQ issues, I was so nervous about standing out in a county that is, for the most part, racially and culturally homogenous. However, hearing from others who had done it before was really encouraging, and I can't articulate how special it was that this course didn't overlook those identities.”

Holly, George Mason University student in Japan.

Insights from expats and locals

Video snippets from locals and expats are distributed throughout the module, highlighting certain experiences, providing learners with tips and advice as well as giving them further insight into how they may be perceived and treated.

Kamal, a queer Lebanese man, shares his experience with coming out while living in Japan.

Lucrezia, a researcher in London, originally from Italy, talks about the way women are treated in Italy.

Edward gives some advice on what to consider when traveling to the UK as a Person of Color.
