Behind the scenes

CulturaGo’s Introduction to Spanish Culture is the combined effort of many passionate, dedicated, and talented individuals.

Let’s start with the course creator, Maria Mazur. You’ve got her to thank for much of the integral information you’ll find in this course.

Postdoctoral and senior researchers and teachers from prestigious universities, such as Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and the University of Oxford, have also lent their expertise to CulturaGo’s Introduction to Spanish Culture.

Their careful auditing of the course content has helped keep us true to our core values of accountability and accuracy.

Additionally, Introduction to Spanish Culture draws on the wisdom and first-hand accounts of over twenty contributors. Among them are exchange students, teachers, digital nomads, and social workers from various areas of Spain, as well as expats from countries like the US, UK, Germany, and China.

We’ve put a lot of work into making this course the best it can be!

Course Modules

Take it step-by-step with our six course modules.

Spain at a Glance

Get to grips with Spain at first glance. Discover what principles are considered important, like punctuality, using real world examples. You’ll also cover topics like work ethic, social life, values, communication style, and family dynamics.

Regions of Spain

This section looks at Spain’s towns, cities, and regions, and considers how rural and metropolitan life differs. Pay close attention if you plan to explore this remarkable country from within (and you should!)

Spanish Customs and Etiquette

Moving onto the next section, we explore what life is like in Spain. This is where you’ll get loads of practical advice on how to interact confidently and respectfully, without causing offense or making clumsy faux pas.

Adjusting to Life in Spain

This module will teach you what to expect and how to effectively adjust to Spanish culture, with personal advice and tips from expats who’ve been through it themselves.

Becoming a Local

There are few things more satisfying in travel than when you get to know a place and the people well enough to be considered a ‘local’. In this module you’ll learn about nightlife, where to meet people and make friends, and common hobbies and interests.

Identities, Diversity, and Inclusion in Spain

Here you can find useful information about what it means to be different in Spain because of your ethnicity, race, gender and sexuality. The module collects both historical information and present experiences of local and expat women, LGBTQ+ people, and BIPOC to help you better understand the workings of Spanish society, and make you aware of your own position. Civil rights, gender and racial equality, and safety while traveling are some of the topics covered in this module.
